Did you know the first service to ever be conducted in St Nicholas Australind’s Heritage Church took place 176 years ago, on the 12th of September 1850? This fascinating fact was one of many shared last weekend, when the church building was open to the public as part of this year’s Harvey Region Heritage Festival.
A number of volunteers from St Nics offered their time to welcome visitors from as far as north of Perth into the heritage church, with almost 50 people passing through the doors over the weekend.
Another interesting fact… that first service in September 1850 was conducted by the congregational minister John Allnut, who composed a hymn especially for the opening of the church. A copy of the words of the hymn can be found in the folder in the heritage church, as well as at the WA State Library!
The heritage church, which is often referred to as ‘Australia’s smallest church’, has great significance not just in the Australind township but in the Bunbury diocese as a continual place of worship for the community.
What a privilege that we can share this with others!
